︎︎︎immersive experience

The oceans play a major role in achieving balance within the carbon cycle. The water and atmosphere take part in a carbon exchange necessary in the cycle. Due to human activities that produce carbon dioxide, the world's oceans have become more acidic. These human activities cause rising co2 levels leading to ocean acidification. This prevents a build up of calcium carbonate, which corals draw from seawater to build their skeleton. Because of this acidification, coral is less equipped to repair and reproduce. Over time the coral will begin to diminish and die off.

This immersive experience creates a physical space for people to walk through and confront a coral reef. The exhibition is created entirely of realistic, all white 3d printed coral, which is being implemented in our oceans to rebuild ecosystems today.

02. virtual reality

This immersive experience displays the realistic effects that rising carbon dioxide levels have on our oceans and the sealife within them. By entering into this virtual reality realm, viewers have theopportunity to experience and understand the process of ocean acidification and the damage that it causes. In order to keep our reefs lively and colorful, human activity must be monitored more closely. The effects of human activity on our coral reefs are massive. While walking through this immersive experience, color and sealife will be shown through the lense of the VR headset. Throughout the experience, color and life will begin to deminish. To save the reef, users must eliminate co2 molecules and pop bubbles with their controllers to balance the pH level.

By becoming aware and spreading this knowledge, humans have the ability to make a difference in our oceans. Without coral reefs, there is no life at all. Our ecosystems depend on each other to thrive. By experiencing this immersive virtual reality setting, we are exposing ourselves to the reality of our reefs. Most people will never encounter a coral reef in real life, however, this experience gives us an opportunity to live through the acidification process.  This exhibit will hopefully inform the population to take a stepback and realize the greatness of this issue. By spreading awareness, donating to the cause, and re-building our reefs, we could see major growth in our oceanic habitats.
